Tomatoes are blooming but not tied: what to do?

Content

If tomatoes are blooming but do not form ovaries, you need to carefully study the conditions for their cultivation. In the greenhouse, problems are especially common. For various reasons, tomatoes are not tied in the open field. The main conditions for the successful cultivation of a crop are observance of humidity, heat, lighting, the amount of fertilizing, pollination control, and in addition, the characteristics of the selected variety must be taken into account. Tomatoes are a little capricious, but if you give them the proper attention, they will respond with great gratitude.

Blossom, but not tied: the reasons for the inhibition of greenhouse plantings

The main reasons why tomatoes are not tied in the greenhouse are: lack or excess of heat, moisture, nutrition and light, as well as diseases of the bush and an incorrectly selected variety.

Air temperature in the greenhouse

Heat-loving tomatoes are sensitive to coolness. For comfortable growth and fruiting, the plant needs a stable temperature within + 20-25 degrees. Tomatoes can suffer from both cold and heat.

One of the most common reasons for the absence of ovaries is the temperature drop to +15 degrees. In such conditions, the pollen simply does not ripen, and accordingly, pollination does not occur.

Greenhouse tomatoes

Important! In tomatoes, pollen ripens at night, so you need to rely on night temperatures.

Even short-term heat can negatively affect the setting of tomatoes. The air temperature above +25 makes the pollen absolutely sterile.

How to solve the problem with climatic conditions:

  1. In hot weather, leave the greenhouse doors ajar overnight. Ventilate plantings often.
  2. Moisten the soil more often if the air temperature rises.
  3. To combat low temperatures, water the plantings with warm water.
  4. If forecasters predicted a short-term drop in temperature at night, prepare dark-colored bottles, fill them with water and place them between the rows: they will keep the daytime warm.
  5. For better heating, it does not hurt to additionally cover the beds with a film or blanket.
  6. In cold climates, additional heating will have to be arranged in the greenhouse.

Watering and humidity

Humidification with cold water often results in no fruit set on the flowers. To moisturize, take extremely warm and settled water.

Tomatoes are considered drought tolerant crops. But! If you do not saturate the soil with water during the period of growth and the beginning of flowering, tomatoes will simply shed their flowers even before pollination.

The result will be no better if the tomatoes are regularly poured. Excess moisture in the confined space of the greenhouse leads to dampness in the air. From this, the pollen clumps and cannot get enough sleep from the anthers.

Advice! How to determine the lack of moisture? This can be seen from the cracked ground. The leaves of plants begin to curl from drought, the tops of the shoots droop.

The solution to the humidity problem is very simple. Moisten dry air in the greenhouse with morning sprays - just do not overdo it, tomatoes do not tolerate moisture accumulation on the aboveground part of the bush.

No pollination

In greenhouse conditions, the problem of pollination is quite acute. In order for insects to get inside the structure, they need to be lured, for example, by spraying the bushes with a sweet honey solution.

Pollination of tomatoes

Experienced gardeners also carry out artificial pollination. In fact, it is not difficult.Enough in the morning you need to walk around the greenhouse and shake the bushes by the stem. Another option is to pick up the pollen with a brush and process the flowers. Finally, if the length of the wire allows, you can create a wind simulation by placing a fan in the room.

Lack of light

Greenhouse tomatoes do not set well due to lack of light. When the bushes are too thickened, important parts do not receive solar energy. This inhibits the appearance of ovaries.

Decision - tie up and correctly form greenhouse plantings.

Excess or lack of nutrients

A partial loss of yield is often caused by a deficiency of basic nutrients: potassium and phosphorus. In order for the ovaries to appear, regularly and in a timely manner feed the tomatoes with mineral complexes and organic matter, without exceeding the dosage.

Flowering tomato

Too much food is just as dangerous as not eating enough. Bushes in too comfortable conditions are easy to identify by powerful stems and an abundance of leaves. Apply nitrogen fertilizers strictly according to the recipe. If you overdo it, the tomatoes bloom very poorly or do not form buds at all. Apply nitrogen from early spring to the beginning of flowering.

What to do if tomatoes are overfed:

  1. In a few steps remove stepsons.
  2. Water the ground so that the substances move to the lower layers.
  3. Stop watering for 5-7 days.
  4. Loosen the soil and add sawdust - they will draw in excess nitrogen.
  5. In the flowering process, give preference to phosphate-potassium fertilizers, such as superphosphate.

Diseases

Tomatoes shed flowersif affected by a fungus. To wait for the harvest, you first need to eliminate the causative agent of the disease.

Note: After treatment with pesticides, the effectiveness of pollen may decrease.

If you do not fight with rot and other diseases, even after flowering, ovaries on the bushes will not appear. It is better to take care of the health of the bush and harvest a smaller crop than lose it altogether.

Features of the variety and seeds

Some varieties are especially sensitive to cold snaps. In order not to lose the ovary, such bushes need to be planted later than others. And it is better to select any tomatoes in accordance with the climatic conditions of the region, and take zoned seeds.

Gardeners who grow tomatoes from hand-picked seeds are often faced with the lack of ovaries. This is usually because the mother plants are from a hybrid variety. Such shrubs do not produce planting material, which, when germinated, is capable of forming fruits.

Why tomatoes in the open field suffer

Outdoor conditions are harsher and more difficult to regulate humidity and temperature. However, there should be no problems with lighting and pollination in the beds. An excess of moisture and nutrition is more terrible for tomatoes than a lack. Therefore, growing them outdoors is slightly more difficult than growing them in a greenhouse.

Growing tomatoes

What to do if there is no tomato ovary in the street garden? Reasons and ways to protect landings:

  1. Heat. It is solved by increasing the frequency of watering. Apply water under the bush. You cannot wet the stem and leaves - there will be a burn.
  2. Excess nitrogen. Eliminated in the same way as in the greenhouse.
  3. Lack of nitrogen. Under these conditions, tomatoes grow weak, with thin and sluggish branches and poorly developed clusters. If these signs are found, by the time of the expected flowering, be sure to feed the plantings with organic matter, for example, mullein solution.

Why tomatoes don't bloom

The gardener should be alerted by the absence of any flowers on the bushes. More often tomatoes produce flowers, but for some reason they do not form ovaries. What if there are no flowers on the plants at all?

The problems are the same: excess nutrition, disturbances in care, diseases:

  1. The flowers are overfed with nitrogen. This element has a positive effect on the growth of green mass. With its excess, the plant spends all its energy on the maintenance of powerful shoots and huge leaves. Tomatoes are simply not up to flowering.
  2. Diseases. The seeds were initially infested and planted untreated. The pathogenic microorganism could also be found in the soil. To prevent many diseases, it is useful to soak tomato seeds in a solution of potassium permanganate - 1 g per 1 liter of water. The soil before planting is treated in several ways: with potassium permanganate, heating, freezing.
  3. Seeds of hybrids are planted that do not bear fruit.
  4. The flowering time of this variety has not yet come.

Seedling growing rules

Young seedlings at home require careful treatment:

  1. Picking carry out carefully, as fragile tomato roots are easily damaged.
  2. Take the soil for transplanting the same as in the previous pot.
  3. When picking for each bush, select a separate pot: they should not be cramped.

Seedlings of tomatoes

If tomatoes are planted in open ground, then there should be no problems with flowering. For plantings that remain on the balcony, there are difficulties with pollination. The technique of artificial pollination comes to the rescue.

How else to help tomatoes

For stable fruiting, special stimulating preparations are produced. During the heat treat the bushes with boric acid solution (1 g per 1 liter of warm water). The gardener's shop sells drugs "Ovary", "Bud", "Zircon", "Tomaton", "Gibbersib", etc.

If the ovaries have not formed after all the measures, gardeners recommend picking all empty flowers. Let the plant expend energy to grow new buds.

If a problem is found at the time of fruit setting, action must be taken immediately. When comfortable conditions are restored, greenhouse and street tomatoes quickly adapt and move to active fruiting, of course, if these are not mistakenly planted seeds of hybrids.
