Planting grape cuttings and subsequent plant care

Planting grape cuttings is the most efficient way to grow these grapes in your garden. This method is quite simple. The main thing is to do everything correctly, strictly following the recommendations below.

Harvesting grape cuttings

Harvesting cuttings

Cuttings (also called "shanks") should be prepared in autumn. To do this, cut short shoots from the top of a healthy, fruiting vine. This should be done with a well-sharpened clean knife, along an oblique line.

Then the shafts are washed with cold water, wrapped in a dense plastic wrap and put into the refrigerator. The ideal storage temperature is between zero and five degrees Celsius. You can also sprinkle the workpiece with wet sand, but then you need to be very careful to avoid mold.

It will be necessary to plant shanks in the spring. For the best result, you need to select the best ones. To understand which of them are suitable for growing, you can use the following criteria.

  • It is necessary to take cuttings of an even green color, without dark spots, rot, plaque and traces of mechanical damage.
  • It is better to grow grapes from shanks, the width of which does not exceed eight millimeters. The length can vary from twelve to sixty centimeters. But it is important to remember that a shoot that is not long enough will grow very poorly, and too long it will not be well stored.
  • There should be at least two or three buds on the handle.
  • The cut must be neat, level and dry.

Germination of grape cuttings

Germination

Growing grapes from cuttings begins in spring, at the beginning of April. First of all, the shanks must be properly prepared for planting. To do this, they are again washed with cold water, and then left for six hours in a solution of potassium permanganate for the purpose of disinfection. Also, with this soaking, potassium permanganate works as a fertilizer.

Then you need to cut the cuttings a couple of millimeters and soak again. This time - in cold water for a day or two. You can additionally add a little “Kornevin” to this water - this is a special fertilizer to improve root growth. About a third of the cutting should be immersed in the liquid.

Advice

At the end of the shank, which will be in the water, you can make several shallow notches. It will also promote the growth and development of the root system.

Then the cuttings prepared in this way are transplanted into plastic cups filled with soil. As a rule, ordinary garden soil is used, to which a little sand and humus are added. You can also feed this mixture with mineral fertilizer. Now the seedlings must be placed in a warm, not ventilated, slightly shaded place. Further care consists in regular watering with warm water. Rooting then takes about a month.

Landing

After the formation of strong, healthy roots, you can plant grape cuttings in a permanent place. A visible indicator that the seedlings are ready for planting is the formation of a small amount of full leaves on the shoots.

It is best to plant a plant in the garden in spring - at the very beginning of May. A complex mineral fertilizer must be added to the bottom of the planting hole. The seedlings should be spaced at least twenty centimeters apart. In case of strong growth in the future, weeding may be required.

At the end of the planting process, water the grapes abundantly. Supports for future vines are best done at the same time, because after the seedlings have grown, they will interfere with this process. In addition, they can be damaged inadvertently.

Advice

It is best to plant grapes away from any other plants, as it gets along very poorly with other garden crops.

Care

We figured out how to plant grapes with cuttings. Now you need to pay attention to the question of how to properly care for him. In the first year of planting, competent care of the plant is especially important, since it is at this time that it is still weak, just beginning its development.

The first step is to loosen the soil that is too dense after planting. In the spring, towards the end of May, when the shoot is overgrown with young leaves, it will be necessary to form a small depression around each trunk.

Closer to August, it is worth pruning the upper roots located on the underground part of the shoot. This is done so that the main part of the root system, which lies deeper, can develop normally. It is necessary to cut it at a depth of twenty centimeters.

Watering must be done abundantly, usually a bucket of water is taken for one bush of the plant. The frequency depends on the weather: in spring, less watering is usually required than in summer. It is also recommended to add mineral fertilizer to the water every time. After watering or rain, it is necessary to loosen the soil around the plant.

Advice

Grape care, of course, includes plant fertilization. In addition to the method described above, you can also spray the leaves with a solution of mineral preparations. This will be especially true during the flowering period.

Pruning the vine

Pruning and garter

An important part of growing and caring for grapes is pruning. The most important thing is to do it right. In the spring you will not have to cut and tie anything, but at the very beginning of the summer season you will need to carry out an operation called "dry garter". Its essence lies in tying last year's vines to the support. Thus, the main direction of their growth is set. It is also necessary to carry out new garters every time the shoot grows twenty centimeters. The next stage of care is the removal of excess shoots. Weak, poorly developing and sterile branches and side shoots are cut.

In late June - early July, the grapes are pinched. Fruiting shoots, especially long ones, are slightly shortened so that the berries receive more nutrients. Too long vines that have reached two and a half meters are also pinched. If this is not done, the plant will stretch further, which will negatively affect the taste of the fruit.

In addition, pinching and trimming of the mustache should be done. The tops of young shoots are trimmed to the first normal leaf. It is also worth breaking off old foliage, which blocks access to light for young leaves and berries.

Output

So we figured out how to plant grapes with cuttings. Growing it and further care is not too difficult. However, this process has its own pitfalls, nuances that you need to know about if you take on this business.

Grapes require abundant and frequent watering. At least as often, he needs feeding. For these purposes, as a rule, a complex mineral fertilizer is used, which is applied both with water at each watering, and by spraying the leaves.

It is also very important to correctly assemble the shanks and prepare them for planting. This is one of the main points of grape care. Particular attention should be paid to loosening the soil around the vine bushes. It should be produced every time after watering.

Also, caring for this plant involves complex measures for tying and pruning shoots, usually carried out in the summer.
