How to tie a hydrangea beautifully?

Content

The question of how to tie a hydrangea often worries those who grow a tree species. You can tie up garden shrubs in different ways, but it does not always look aesthetically pleasing. However, there are a few win-win garter options that will not spoil the hydrangea's appearance while helping to keep it safe and sound.

Why tie up a hydrangea?

The height of a tree hydrangea depends on the variety and can be from 1 to 3 meters. The shrub is characterized by lush flowering, while it is difficult for the shoots to keep the massive caps of the inflorescences upright.

The problem is aggravated by rain, when the brushes, saturated with moisture, bend almost to the ground. Strong winds can also hurt. Even if the branches do not break off, the bush will lose its shape, it will “fall apart”. In this case, the plant will lose its attractive appearance. That is why tree hydrangea needs a garter.

Garter methods and materials

Some summer residents use a non-woven covering material to tie hydrangeas, cut into strips 15–20 cm wide. They simply tie the bush in a circle, sometimes at several levels. This method is simple and affordable, but the shrub does not look very beautiful, since the fabric is visible between the leaves. A flowering bush will look much more spectacular when using the following methods:

  • The individual version of the garter involves securing each shoot with twine on a high peg or metal bar driven into the ground. The rod is installed near the center of the bush or behind it. Then one or more shoots are tied with twine and the other end of the rope is fixed on the support. Dense foliage will hide the support, the hydrangea will look organic and at the same time will be protected from breaking off branches.

  • Reliable support is considered to be in the form of one or more hoops fixed on metal rods. The ends of the rods are dug into the ground for the stability of the supporting structure, and the bush itself should be inside the hoop. Outside, the structure can be fenced off with a wooden picket fence. Such a composition will look well-groomed and neat.
  • You can shield the hydrangea tree-like with a green polymer-coated mesh welded into a cylinder. Such a design will reliably protect the bush from loss of shape, breakage of branches and at the same time remain invisible.

As the hydrangea grows, the support will have to be replaced - for example, so that the hoops are located at a higher height. The structure can be left for the winter, or it can be removed.

If the individual shoot tie method was used, the support is removed during autumn pruning.

Pruning hydrangeas in autumn

When growing a tree hydrangea in the garden, you need to take into account its needs. Only young bushes do not need a garter. As the plant grows, its branches are carefully maintained in an upright position in any way possible, then unpleasant surprises will not happen.
