Daylily description

Today breeders of Australia and the USA are mainly engaged in the development of new varieties of daylily. The emerging new items are distinguished by an exquisite appearance, but at the same time they are more capricious in their care than traditional varieties. Experts strive to increase the diameter of the flowers, to achieve greater doubleness. The varieties with corrugated petals look especially interesting.

General description of the daylily:

  • the leaves of the plant are collected in a rosette, they are characterized by a vertical or curved arrangement;
  • peduncles, depending on the variety, reach a length of 30-60 cm;
  • after flowering, fruit boxes with seeds are formed on the arrows;
  • daylily has thick filamentous roots that extract moisture in the deep layers of the soil, which allows the plant to tolerate drought well;
  • flowers are characterized by a funnel-shaped shape;
  • petals can be monochromatic or variegated (orange, yellow, red-brown, cream, lavender).

The most common species is the red daylily, sometimes called brown-yellow. The Middendorf variety is also popular, featuring early flowering.

Popular species and varieties

On sale you can find many types and varieties of daylily. Some of them, like TET daylilies, can bloom twice in the same season. The plant blooms in early summer, and then, after resting for 2-3 weeks, it can again release a flower arrow.

Daylilies hybrid

Daylily hybrid

This group of plants includes varieties with early, middle and late flowering periods.

According to the botanical classification, hybrids are also divided into three groups:

  • sleeping;
  • evergreen;
  • partly evergreen.

These plants can have a wide variety of flower shapes. Buds are round, star-shaped, fringed, triangular, terry. The diameter of the flowers of this species can reach 20 cm, and the color of the petals in different varieties has 18 shades.

Daylily hybrid hemerocallis

Daylily hybrid hemerocallis

The hybrid daylily hemerocallis is an evergreen species. This group includes 20 natural hybrids:

  • Forest,
  • Dumortier,
  • small,
  • folded,
  • Thunberg,
  • Jesse and others.

For high-quality flowering, these varieties need planting in a sunny place. It is under such conditions that the varietal qualities of hemerocallis hybrids are fully revealed. For planting in the middle lane and cold regions, it is necessary to select only frost-resistant varieties with early and medium flowering periods.

Daylilies Voroshilova

Voroshilova A.B. is a well-known breeder of daylilies in Russia. She bred dozens of varietal plants of all kinds of color and degree of terry.

The variety "Monarchia" is extraordinarily beautiful with corrugated pale pink petals. Closer to the center of the flower, crimson strokes stand out, the middle is yellow.

The variety "Moonlight Sonata" has an ocher color, the edges of the petals are wavy, curling towards the center. Voroshilova's daylily "Umka" looks very gentle.Its large flowers are lemon-white in color and have a light green center. The petals of the plant are very dense.

Variety "Stella de Oro"

The Stella de Oro daylily variety is distinguished by its increased winter hardiness. The plant is suitable for planting even in cold climates, therefore it is popular.

The shrub is compact in size, its average height is 40-50 cm. The flowers can be yellow and orange, emit a light pleasant aroma. The size of the opened buds is 5-6 cm. Flowering lasts from June to September continuously. Narrow linear leaves emphasize the beauty of the flowers.

Daylily grade Double Dream

Double Dream variety

The Double Dream hybrid daylily grows up to 50-60 cm in height. The plant is distinguished by unusually delicate double flowers of salmon color. Flowering occurs in 2 waves and is characterized as abundant. The shrub opens its buds between July and August. The maximum flower diameter is 12 cm.

The variety winters well in any region when using mulch as a shelter.

Daylily home

Daylily can be grown indoors. Not every variety is suitable for this. Usually, the daylily is chosen for planting red, lemon yellow, small and other compact species.

The most important condition for a home daylily to bloom is good lighting. With a lack of light, the flowers will be small or will not bloom at all.

In the spring, during active growth, the daylily is fed with mineral fertilizers. You need to water the plant occasionally, with small doses of water. When watering, moisture should not get on the flowers. An overgrown plant needs a transplant. The bush is planted in the garden between May and August. It is better not to transplant flowering plants; transplanting will weaken them.

Planting daylilies in the garden in spring

When choosing a place for these plants in the garden, it should be borne in mind that they require a lot of sun.

Landing features:

  • Daylilies are not afraid of winds, so they can grow well in an open area.
  • Fruit bushes and trees should not be nearby.
  • It is better to plant varieties with a rich color of petals in places where there is a light shadow, then the flowers will not fade.
  • Planting in the spring is almost always straightforward. If necessary, the shrub can be planted in early autumn or summer in a cool period.
  • Not only does outdoor planting and care play an important role, attention must also be paid to the quality of the planting material. Delenki should be free from signs of diseases and have healthy light roots.
  • Before planting, the root system is soaked in a rooting stimulator (Kornevin, Heteroauxin).
  • The soil should be loose, with neutral acidity.
  • After planting, the earth is tamped and watered.
  • To facilitate maintenance, you can mulch the flower bed with peat, mowed grass, chopped bark or straw. In this case, there will be no need for frequent watering, loosening and weeding.

A culture can grow in one place for more than 10 years, flowers reach their peak of development at the 5-7th year of life. It is advisable to transplant the daylily as rarely as possible. Sometimes such a need arises in case of excessive growth of a bush or when redeveloping a site.

Growing a crop from seeds

The cultivation of daylilies from seeds is mainly used in breeding work to obtain new varieties. When using your own seed, it must be borne in mind that the varietal characteristics of the plant in this case are not preserved.

Sowing rules:

  1. before planting, the seeds are stored in the refrigerator, wrapped in paper along with dry sand;
  2. in early spring, seeds are sown for seedlings at home or in heated greenhouses;
  3. pre-planting material is soaked in water with the addition of alcohol (1 tsp per liter of water) or 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for 12 hours;
  4. you can pre-germinate seeds by wrapping them in a damp cloth or paper towel;
  5. after the emergence of seedlings, the seeds are planted in loose nutrient soil to a depth of 0.5 cm in a common container;
  6. then the seedlings are sprayed with water and covered with foil;
  7. crops are ventilated daily and sometimes moistened.

Compliance with all conditions contributes to almost one hundred percent germination of the daylily. With the seed method of reproduction, new hybrids can be obtained by pollinating plants of one variety with pollen from another. From the mother (pollinated) plant, the daylily inherits the flowering time, the size of the flowers, the dimensions of the bush. The paternal specimen is responsible for the color and shape of the flowers.

Flowering hybrid daylilies

Plant care

When caring for the daylily, watering, loosening, weeding are used. It is not necessary to fill the flowers, but at the same time they need moisture during flowering, otherwise the plants can shed flowers or stop forming buds altogether, the leaves will turn pale. Irrigation is best done in the early morning or evening. In the heat, the flower is watered by sprinkling.

Since the soil is usually fertilized before planting, fertilizing begins to be applied from the 2nd year. During the season, fertilizers are applied 4 times:

  • in the spring, nitrogen fertilizing is necessary;
  • in the summer, fertilizer is applied twice with a high content of phosphorus and potassium;
  • in the fall, potassium-phosphorus mixtures are also introduced.

Most daylilies tolerate cold well, but in regions with snowless winters, it is recommended to cover plants with spruce branches, straw, non-woven material. The shelter is removed in the spring when the snow begins to melt.

Daylily does not bloom

Why isn't the daylily blooming?

The main reason for the lack of flowering is the lack of sunlight. The plant needs 5-7 hours of direct sun daily to form buds. This fact must be taken into account initially, so as not to transplant flowers later.

Another reason may be that the bush is crowded. Daylilies are planted at a distance of at least 0.5 m from each other. An overgrown specimen must be planted in a timely manner.

Flowering may also be absent due to non-compliance with planting dates. For example, if a bush is planted in the summer heat, the plant will experience severe stress and, as a result, will not bloom either this or next season.

Other possible reasons why the daylily is not blooming include:

  • too poor watering;
  • excess or deficiency of fertilizers;
  • damage by diseases and pests;
  • excessive deepening of the root collar;
  • too young age.
