Is spring or fall more suitable for planting roses?

Content

Each grower takes care of his plants and the beauty of the flower beds throughout the year. For example, planting roses in fall or spring is an important event. This flower is called the queen of the garden for a reason. He is both luxurious and demanding to take care of himself at the same time. But many are interested in the question, at what time of year is it better to plant a plant so that it takes root and feels good?

Autumn planting roses

Benefits of Autumn

Florists who already have extensive experience in growing roses declare that autumn days, mainly in September, are ideal for planting them. There are several arguments to prove their correctness.

  1. Autumn planting is usually done in September, although there is a later option - until mid-October. This is the time when the heat has already subsided, the soil is constantly moistened, and frosts, dangerous for young plants, are just on the horizon.
    The spring planting time is the end of March and the beginning of April. Those who live in the middle zone and more northern regions know very well that the weather is unpredictable in early spring. During this period, the thermometer drops below 0 ° C much more often than in September, when the air and soil are still warm enough for seedlings.
  2. Another important advantage of planting roses in September is also associated with weather conditions, namely, with air humidity. In spring it rarely exceeds 65%, while in September it is 85%. The more moisture, the better for the planted plant. And precipitation in early autumn is more likely than in mid-spring.
  3. The third advantage is relevant for those who are a true connoisseur of roses and collect various varieties of this flower. It is in September that the season of sales and fairs of seedlings begins in nurseries, which for some reason could not be sold in the spring-summer season. At this time, you can purchase not only healthy new seedlings, which will pleasantly please with their flowering next year, but also rare and expensive varieties. And with a big discount! True, at such events you need to be careful: sometimes unscrupulous sellers try to sell a sick or dried plant.

Autumn is perhaps the best time of the year to plant new roses. But there are still some nuances.

Rose pruning

Disadvantages of autumn

It should be noted that when choosing a seedling brought from southern latitudes, planting should still be carried out in the spring, since a young plant may not withstand a more severe winter. For this you can hide it either on the balcony or in the cellar. But in most cases in stores and nurseries they sell plants already adapted to the local climate. Therefore, difficulties are unlikely to arise with him.

Also, after the autumn pruning of the rose, many cuttings remain. Of course, many gardeners feel sorry for discarding these cut shoots. But a beginner in planting and caring for this flower may have difficulties with autumn rooting. Therefore, you can save the cuttings, and in the spring, with the onset of warm weather, start planting them.

Planting roses in the fall is usually associated with a certain risk - there is a high probability of sudden frosts on the soil. This danger lies in wait for residents of regions with a harsher climate than in the middle lane. To prevent the plant from dying, it is better to take into account all the risks in advance, consult with more experienced colleagues "in the garden" and make a decision.

Blooming roses

The right time

Speaking about planting seedlings, it must be said that the main task is their successful rooting. The best natural conditions for this are created in September - early October.If roses are planted at this particular time, then they will have time to adapt to a new habitat before the onset of cold weather and will take root, that is, they will put down young roots. This plant usually takes at least 2 weeks.

Therefore, you need to choose the right date for planting - from its moment to the onset of cold weather should pass at least 2-3 weeks. In the middle lane, the deadline is mid-October. And residents of other regions - for example, the Urals and the Far East - must independently choose the time, based on the peculiarities of the local climate. But a rose planted in spring can be as good as its autumn friend.

Preparation of rose seedlings

Preparation of seedlings

When the seedlings are purchased, you can proceed directly to planting. Before this, the planting material and the soil must be prepared.

The root system of a new plant can be either open or in a coma of earth. In the first case, the seedlings should be soaked in water for 24 hours, and then they can be treated with iron sulfate. An important step is pruning the plant. After a careful examination, all injured and damaged areas, dry leaves are removed from him, and the roots are also trimmed: they should not be longer than 30 cm. The stems are also cut off, leaving no more than four. It is also better to shorten the rest of the shoots: 3-4 healthy buds on each will be quite enough. This will make the bush more lush and attractive.

To stimulate the early formation of new young roots, it is recommended to process an already cut seedling with a homemade solution: 2 parts of ordinary clay and 1 part of a mullein. This mixture is diluted to the consistency of sour cream, and then the root system of the seedlings is dipped into it for 15 minutes.

Preparing the soil for the rose

Soil preparation

The rose loves light, therefore, before planting, it is necessary for her to choose a site where she will receive the amount of sunlight she needs. At this place, they dig a hole 60 cm deep, about 50 cm wide and long. At first glance, it may seem that it will be too big for a rose. But this is not at all true! In such conditions, there will be space for the growth and development of the root system. Consequently, the rose will be stronger and healthier. If you dig a smaller hole, the flower will feel somewhat cramped and grow slowly.

After that, the pit is filled with water and the selected fertilizers are added to it:

  • 3 shovels of humus mixed with the ground;
  • diluted mullein;
  • 1 guest of wood ash;
  • complexes of minerals;
  • other organic food.

These rules apply to planting roses in both fall and spring. If you follow them, the plants will quickly begin to overgrow with new roots, through which the absorption of nutrients and life-giving moisture from the soil will pass. And the "queen of the garden" will further respond to such care with lush flowering.

Planting a rose seedling

Planting seedlings

If the plant has an open root system, then before planting it, it is recommended to pour a small mound of soil in the center of the hole. You can evenly distribute and spread the roots over it so that they do not interfere with each other.

Next, there are two options.

  1. Holding the seedling itself with one hand in an upright position, pour water into the hole, in which the root-forming agent was previously diluted, and then carefully cover it with soil.
  2. First cover with earth, tamp, and only then pour the same liquid.

The second method is used more often, because the soil will settle under the influence of water. If this is not done, then after the first heavy rain, the plant may deepen unnecessarily into the ground. Therefore, even if the first option was chosen, after planting it is better to pour a bucket of water onto the soil surface.
Watering a rose seedling
If you need to plant a plant whose roots are in an earthen coma, then it is simply lowered to the bottom of the pit, and the remaining space is covered with peat or humus. Then you need to tamp the soil and spill it with two buckets of water. You should do several passes, each time waiting for all the moisture to be absorbed.

It is also important to consider the distance between roses. Garden varieties must be planted at a distance of 80 cm - 1 m from each other, hybrid tea - 40 cm, and climbing - more than a meter. When planting is complete, it remains to spud each plant. This will not only stimulate the development of the seedling, but also protect it from the cold. If planted in autumn, the rose should remain in this state throughout the winter. It is recommended to additionally insulate young plants.

In spring, it is also not recommended to rush to open the seedling: this should be done in rainy or cloudy weather, in the early morning or evening. If the plant was planted in April-May, then it will be dismissed after the appearance of young green shoots and the establishment of warm weather.

Regardless of what time of year the roses were planted, with the right care, you can rightly expect that very soon they will turn into beautiful plants covered with elegant flowers. Planting roses in spring, as well as in autumn, is actively practiced by gardeners throughout Russia. If you follow all the planting rules, then these flowers will actively develop and gain buds.
