  • beautiful, very strong aroma;
  • flowering throughout the summer;
  • abundant flowering throughout the bush;
  • a variety of shades.

It is not surprising that plants with such properties are loved by gardeners. In addition, varieties of the appropriate size can be selected depending on the needs. For example, undersized ones are suitable for decorating a curb, higher ones can be used for hedge... There are also curly species that look great on gazebos. But before you start breeding, it is worth remembering that English roses should receive quality care.

Planting an English rose

How to plant an English rose?

At home, this plant is grown with the help of seedlings. They are recommended to be purchased in trusted stores that monitor the quality of their products. It is possible that a variety that does not correspond to the declared one will be sold from the hands, and it will not be an English rose.

Planting the plant should be done in a suitable location. English roses love the sun, but they can grow where there is shade for part of the day. But drafts should be avoided, as well as lowlands and areas where groundwater is located nearby. It is better not to plant new plants where these bushes grew before.

There are no special requirements for the soil. But it's good if it is light, oxygenated. If it is too dense, then it is recommended to add sand to it.

Advice

Some varieties cannot open up on their own in rainy weather. They need to be helped manually.

It is best if planting takes place in autumn, in September or October, before the first frost. The seedling should be shortened and the leaves removed. The English rose can also be planted in spring. But then it is worth taking care of the soil in the fall, digging it deeply to facilitate care. In this case, humus must be added.

Landing takes place according to the following algorithm.

  1. They make a clay mash: mix water, clay and manure in a ratio of 10: 3: 3. A growth stimulator is added to the solution (according to the instructions).
  2. They dig a hole 40 by 40 cm in size. Its depth is determined by the length of the roots, usually from 30 to 50 cm.
  3. A special mixture is prepared: crushed clay, sand, peat, humus are mixed, each ingredient is taken in a bucket. Add 2 buckets of garden soil, 2 cups of bone and dolomite meal, a little superphosphate. The resulting mass and fill the pit.
  4. The roots are treated with clay solution. At the same time, water is poured into the pit and waited until it is completely absorbed.
  5. After that, the roots are placed in the pit, they need to be spread well. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the stock is a few centimeters below ground level.
  6. The soil is gradually poured and compacted carefully by hand.
  7. Water again.
  8. After absorption, the bush is spud. This increases the survival rate.

Watering an English rose

How to water and feed?

English roses are quite demanding. Their cultivation is impossible without the application of certain efforts, care is of great importance. One of the important points is watering. It is carried out as needed, when the earth begins to dry out.The amount of water depends on the variety. So, the usual enough 5 liters. But curly ones need more - 15 liters. Don't forget about water quality. Chlorinated tap water can harm the plant. It is necessary to use rain or settled.

When watering, the following rules should be taken into account.

  • Do not get carried away with moisturizing the leaves - this can lead to the development of diseases.
  • Do not water often and little by little. Because of this, surface roots are actively growing, which are easily damaged during soil cultivation.
  • Watering every 4-5 days is usually sufficient.
  • In hot weather, the water should be warm. Otherwise, it will be poorly absorbed by the roots, and the plant will begin to weaken.
  • By the end of August, watering should be stopped. If it rains often, then even earlier.

English roses will grow and bloom normally only if they are regularly fed. This must be done at least three times per season:

  • fertilizers with nitrogen are needed before flowering;
  • organic and mineral - during;
  • phosphorus and potassium - before wintering.

If the planting pits were filled with a suitable mixture, then feeding is not necessary during the first year. This makes growing easier. In the second year, it is helpful to use fresh poultry manure solution. A mullein will do too. To prevent overheating of the roots, mulching with peat is recommended.

Pruning roses for the winter

Pruning

Caring for an English rose also includes pruning. Without this procedure, it is unlikely to be able to look truly beautiful, the bush should be decorated almost from the moment of planting. When sprouts appear, the soil is shaken off a little from the plant, loosened and sprinkled with straw. After the shoots become stronger, they are thinned out, leaving 3 or 4. When they grow up, you should start pruning. It is worth remembering the rule: if the goal is to get large flowers, then you need to halve it. If you cut off the third part, then this will contribute to the appearance of a large number of buds. The climbing view only needs to be shortened by a fifth.

If the English rose is adult, then it must be cut no later than April, otherwise the flowering will be late. All damaged, diseased, small shoots should be removed without delay. You need to make sure that there are no wilted flowers on the bush - this slows down the appearance of buds. Old, stiff shoots that are more than 5 years old are also removed.

The pruning tool must be sharp to avoid injury to the bark. It is recommended to treat the cut site with a disinfectant solution.
